The city of Zurich is situated 409 meters
(1 340 ft.) above sea level at the northern end of the 27 km ( 17 miles) long Lake of Zurich on the Swiss central plateau. Its well-preserved Old Town is to be found on both banks of the River Limmat which flows out of the lake in a northerly direction. The city covers an area of 92 sq. km 3O sq. miles and its highest point is the Utliberg/Uto Kulm 871 meters (2 857 ft) above sea level. With a population of some 363 000 inhabitants Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. The canton of the same name hosts 1.1 million inhabitants and is thus the countries most densely populated canton.

Zurich is located in the very heart of Europe and is easily accessible by all modes of transport. The international Zurich-Kloten Airport is situated just 11 km (7 miles) from the city center and can be reached by train in 10 minutes. As a key transportation hub it is served by over 150 air-lines from all over the world. The main railway station enjoys a central location in the city. There are hourly connections not only to the other large Swiss towns but also to all major cities in Europe.

Zurich was founded as a Roman customs post on the site of what is now Lindenhof in the year 15 B.C. From the 10th C. onwards, it enjoyed the status of a town, and in 1218 was granted the rights of a free city. Rudolf Brun introduced a guild constitution after the downfall of the government in 1336. In 1351 the city joined the Everlasting League of the Confederates, and since then has grown in importance, especially under the rule of Mayor Hans Waldmann at the end of the 15th C. 1519 saw the beginning of the Reformation under the leadership of Huldrych Zwingli. During the 19 C. Alfred Escher transformed Zurich into a trade and business center (machine and textile industry, banks, insurance companies, tourism).

The founding of the Zurich Stock Exchange in 1877 constituted a significant step in this regard. Nowadays, with a total turnover of Sfr. 1,360 million from domestic shores alone (1993 figure), it rank fourth in the world after New York, London and Tokyo. Zurich is also the largest trading center for gold in the world. Most of the Swiss major banks, as well as the Swiss National Bank, have their head offices in Zurich. Zurich is also home to around 350 branches of foreign banks from all over the world.

Zurich has a continental climate although it predominately enjoys the worm humid winds blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. As a result the climate is milder than that usually found at the northern latitude of 47° The temperature fluctuates between -10 °C (14 °F and +5 °C (41 °F) in January and +15 °C (59 °F) and +30 °C (86 °F) in July.

Jahrhundert als Stadt bezeichnet und befestigt. 1218 freie Reichsstadt. 1336 Zunftverfassung von Rudolf Brun. 1351 Beitritt zum Bund der Eidgenossen. Wachsende Bedeutung besonders seit Bürgermeister Hans Waldmann (Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts). 1519 Beginn der Reformation durch Huldrych Zwingli. Im 19. Jahrhundert, zur Zeit Alfred Eschers, Aufstieg zum Verkehrs- und Wirtschaftszentrum der Schweiz (Maschinen- und Textilindustrie, Banken, Versicherungen, Fremdenverkehr).

Zürichs Wasserstrasse ist die Limmat. Eine Bootsfahrt vom Landesmuseum zum Zürichhorn zeigt die Stadt und den See aus besonders reizvoller Perspektive (April bis Oktober). Um Zürich wirklich zu kennen, muss man auch den Zürichsee erlebt haben. Mit einer Fläche von 88,5 km2 ist er der drittgrösste Schweizer See innerhalb der Landesgrenzen. Von April bis Oktober verkehren die grossen Zürichseeschiffe.

Zürich ist ein idealer Ausgangspunkt für Exkursionen in die ganze Schweiz. So ist es ohne weiteres möglich, in einem halben Tag an den Rheinfall oder nach Luzern, auf den Säntis oder die Rigi zu fahren und wieder nach Zürich zurückzukehren. Ganztagesausflüge mit der Bahn oder mit dem Car führen bis ins Tessin, nach Graubünden, auf den Titlis, aufs Jungfraujoch oder über die Landesgrenzen hinaus nach Liechtenstein oder in den Schwarzwald.
