Munich is besides Berlin Germany's most popular tourist destination. A wash in art culture and joie de vivre, this city offers visitors much more than just Oktoberfest and Viktualienmarkt. It is the center of Germany's film industry, leader of its economy and seat of knowledge, science and technology - with Germany's richest collection of museums. Amid extraordinary art collections ranging from the prehistoric to the Avant-garde, stands the world famous Deutsche Museum of science and technology. Not far away, Munich's 70plus theaters offer countless programs and the concert hall Philharmonie am Gasteig is the biggest in the country.

In warmer weather, relax under giant chestnut trees in one of the Munich's typical Bavarian Beergardens. Munich is also a shopper's paradise. Try trolling for treasures on the great shopping boulevards - Maximilianstrasse, Theatinerstrasse and Brienner Strasse - brousing in one of Munich's 15 large department stores or hundreds of small boutiques - any desire can be fulfilled.

For the sports enthusiast anything is possible in the Olympic City of Munich. Besides the new opened Olympic Spirit, an exciting interactive adventure center, in the summer many lakes and rivers in and around the city provide excellent recreational retreats. Highly recommended is the Nude Beach area Flaucher at the Isar River. In the winter you'll find yourself in the middle of the city on prepared cross-country skiing courses in the Nymphenburger Park and the Englischer Garten. Curling and skating are very popular on the Nymphenburger Kanal. If these don't interest you, the Alps are not far away.

Maximilianstraße, Theatinerstraße, Brienner Straße - die Namen der großen Einkaufsboulevards stehen für sich. Darüber hinaus gibt es, neben 15 großen Kaufhäusern, Hunderte von kleinen originellen Geschäften, die jeden Wunsch erfüllen.

Auch Sportbegeisterte kommen in der Olympiastadt auf ihre Kosten. Sowohl im neu eröffneten interaktiven Erlebniscenter Olympic Spirit als von A bis Aikido bis Z wie Zehnkampf ist alles möglich. Im Sommer ziehen die vor den Toren Münchens gelegenen Seen an - sehr zu empfehlen ist das FKK-Gelände Flaucher an der Isar - im Winter findet man mitten in der Stadt, im Englischen Garten und im Nymphenburger Park, gespurte Langlaufloipen vor. Auf dem Nymphenburger Kanal sind Schlittschuhlaufen sehr beliebt. Wem dies nicht rasant genug ist, der kann die Nähe Münchens zu den Alpen nutzen.
