...Cologne was one of the most important of Germany's cities, as grand and impressive as Rome and Constantinople. Today Cologne is known as a city of art, the Carnival - celebrated every year as the "fifth season" - and above all the central German stronghold for gays and lesbians, a direct result of the liberal tolerance and joie de vivre of the local Rhinelanders.

Home to the fourth largest convention hall in the world, Cologne is convention stop number one for countless industries. Not far away, Cologne offers visitors cultural spendor on the highest level. Here, in contemporary Cologne, lie the traces of a 2,000 year history: The old city wall; the remnants of the imperial governor's residence and the Dionysos mosaic near the famous Kölner Dom, the Gothic cathedral that serves as the heart, center and measure of the city. Besides the Dom, built in a 632-year-period, there are - unique in all the world - another 12 Romantic churches - all well maintained.

Artwise, the Cologne Art societey and about 120 galleries will show you exactly what avant-garde is today. The Museum Ludwig houses the world's largest collection of pop art, and in the same building, the Agfa-Foto-Historama is one of the most significant exhibitions of photographs ever assembled. ART COLOGNE, the Art Fair which takes place annually as well as the highlights from the Music Industry, helps to firm up Cologne's impressive reputation as a great metropolis. With more than 2,000 seats and over 400 concerts a year the Cologne Philharmonie is the center for music. Also, Cologne is world renowned as a home for modern music.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, Cologne's culinary offerings have their place. Homemade Rhineland cooking with some effervescent, light Kölsch in one the city's many traditional breweries is a must. Each quarter offers its own atmosphere from the charm of local bars to the sophisticated environs of its top restaurants.

A wonderful mixture of discount shops and exclusive designer boutiques makes shopping in Cologne an exciting adventure. Even on rainy days, delightful architecture and ever present smiles lend Cologne's shopping centers the air of a Piazza or Boulevard.

Heute ist Köln die Stadt der Kunst, des Karnevals, der hier als "fünfte Jahreszeit" gefeiert wird, und vor allem die deutsche Hochburg der Schwulen und Lesben - Zeichen für die liberale Toleranz und überschäumende Lebensfreude der Rheinländer.

Köln verfügt über das viertgrößte Messegelände der Welt, für zahlreiche Wirtschaftszweige ist Köln international der Messeplatz Nr. 1. Daneben bietet Köln Kulturelles von höchstem Niveau. Noch im heutigen Köln kann man den Spuren einer 2000jährigen Geschichte begegnen: der alten Stadtmauer; den Resten des einstigen Sitzes des kaiserlichen Statthalters, dem Prätorium; dem Dionysosmosaik in unmittelbarer Nähe des berühmten Kölner Doms, der als Herz, Mitte und Maßstab der Stadt gilt.

Neben dieser, in einer Bauzeit von 632 Jahren errichteten gotischen Kathedrale sind in Köln - weltweit einzigartig - noch zwölf bedeutende romanische Kirchen erhalten. Der Kölner Kunstverein und etwa 120 Galerien zeigen, was heute wirklich Avantgard ist. Das Museum Ludwig beherbergt die größte Pop-Art-Sammlung der Welt, auch das im gleichen Haus eingerichtete Agfa-Foto-Historama wird zu den weltweit bedeutendsten Sammlungen der Photographie gerechnet. Der alljährlich stattfindende Kunstmarkt ART COLOGNE festigt den Ruf der Stadt als Metropole ebenso wie die Highlights im Musikbereich. Musikalisches Zentrum mit 2.000 Plätzen und mehr als 400 Konzerten im Jahr ist die Kölner Philharmonie, auch die Neue Musik hat in Köln ein Domizil von Weltrang.

Dazwischen hat die berühmte Kölner Gastronomie ihren Platz gefunden: gutbürgerliche Rheinische Küche mit dem obergärigen, leichten Kölsch in einem der traditionsreichen Brauhäuser ist ein Muß. In fast jedem Viertel in Köln ist eine eigene Atmosphäre anzutreffen, vom rustikalen Thekencharme bis zur Spitzengastronomie ist alles vertreten.
